Why Every Band Needs A Keyboard

Why Every Band Needs A Keyboard

The keyboard is a multi dimensional instrument. It can mimic any instrument. That includes guitars, saxophone, trumpet and the piano. Keyboardists are adept at changing instruments and adding a whole new aspect to the orchestra. Adding color with quick and unpredictable changes is the job of a keyboardist. The keyboard can also produce sound effects, which are used in dramas and movies. For example the sound of some one falling or fighting.

The earliest keyboard appeared in the third century BC. It was known as the organ. The organ was the only type of keyboard till the 14th century AD. It did not have keys like today but it had levers, which had to be manipulated with the whole hand. As time went on, keyboards achieved better and better shape. Considerable work was done on the keyboard in the 20th century. Synthesizers developed from 1960′s and the moog synthesizers became popular. These gave a boost to the keyboards.

The keyboard was produced through working on a small piano. People wanted a smaller piano with its sound and quality but without its weight and bulk. This led to the electronic piano, which did not succeeded. A modern day keyboard consists of electronic circuits and is able to change and reproduce various instruments.

Today keyboards are of 2 types. The professional versions which have many features and the smaller and in expensive ones for kids and amateurs. The professionals call the higher models simply keyboards while the amateur ones are called electronic keyboards. These amateur versions can be purchased from electronic stores or shops where mobile phones and video games are sold.

The keyboards have many useful features. One such feature is the midi out port, which allows the musician to control another device through his or her instrument. This can be a personal computer where the musician can store the played songs for later editing. This port can also be used to control devices that have no human interfaces. If the keyboard has a midi in port, then it can be controlled through other instruments, midi controllers and equipment that understand the midi standard of message sending.

The keyboard has become an integral part of every group today. Not only is it used in music, but also in providing sound effects and auditory cues in drama theaters and movies. Keyboards are portable allowing the musicians to carry the instrument with him. Finally, it is a package of many. Although one unit it packs the power of many instruments.

Everything About Moog Synthesizers

Everything About Moog Synthesizers

The range of Moog synthesizers was invented by Dr. Robert Moog around 1966. These synthesizers are large modular ones with quite a few distinct modules connected together by several patch cords, which would route sounds created by oscillators through a set-up of filters and effects. This structure enables the instrument to provide unprecedented flexibility in sound design thereby making the Moog Synthesizer an icon of electronic music culture.

In this decidedly digital age, more and more contemporary musicians and rockers are rediscovering the analog sounds of the Moog synthesizer. Dr. Robert Moog, the inventor started the company Moog Music, initially known as R.A. Moog Co. that manufactured and marketed these synthesizers.

The first Moog instruments were modular synthesizers. In 1971 Moog Music began production of the Minimoog Model D that was among the first extensively available, handy and relatively inexpensive synthesizers. The Moog synthesizers were designed in collaboration with the composers Herbert A. Deutsch, and Wendy Carlos.

Another feather in the cap of the Moog range of synthesizers was the Taurus bass pedal synthesizer that came in 1975. Much like the organ pedals its pedals triggered synthetic bass sounds. The Taurus was known for a “fat” bass sound and was used by the bands Genesis, Rush, Electric Light Orchestra, Yes, Pink Floyd and many others. The modern version of it is known as the Taurus II.

According to the American Physical Society, “The first live performance of a music synthesizer was made by pianist Paul Bley at Lincoln Center in New York City on December 26, 1969. Bley developed a proprietary interface that allowed real-time performance on the music synthesizer.”

The Moog synthesizer reached its first zenith of popularity in the late 1960s with the success of Carlos’ Switched-On Bach. Actually Wendy Carlos’s 1968 album “Switched-On Bach,” a collection of synthesized interpretations of Bach classics, was the synthesizer’s first commercial success, selling more than 1 million copies. It enthused other musicians and bands to follow suit and accordingly many albums tried to get the name of Moog incorporated into their album names as well, for example Country Moog Classics, Martin Denny’s Exotic Moog, etc.

In the present day several Moog products can still be purchased, such as Moogerfoogers, Little Phatty, and Minimoogs. In fact the Minimoog is very popular as they sell for over US00 on online auction sites on a regular basis.

In spite of the fact that the Moog Music created so much uproar in the electronic music industry with the Moog synthesizer, yet it failed to survive for long. Later companies like the Arp and Roland took up the onus on themselves to continue in the lines of the Moog as they developed the instrument and came up with other prototypes. As days passed the Moog became all the more sophisticated and affordable.

The last Moog synthesizers were manufactured in 1985 before the original Moog Music declared bankruptcy in 1986. By the mid 1990s, analog synthesizers were again highly sought after and prized for their classic sound. In 2001, Robert Moog’s company Big Briar was able to acquire the rights to the Moog name and officially became Moog Music. Moog Music has been producing the Minimoog Voyager modeled after the original Minimoog since 2002. As of 2006, more than 15 companies are making Moog-style synthesizer modules.

The Age of the Electronic Keyboard

18 May

The Age of the Electronic Keyboard

In the world of music the latest entry has been the electronic keyboard. There are global manufacturers of connected software. Electronic technology has been incorporated in synthesizers, portable keyboards, digital pianos, home organs, sound modules, sequencers, drum machines and the like. There are keyboard controllers for classical and theatre organs as well as keyboard communications systems.

Whether in the classroom or home it is fun and easy to churn out music with the help of electronic keyboards. The electronic keyboard can be any one of many things – organ, piano, synthesizer or sampler. Most the electronic keyboards can be linked to the computer for experiencing the feel of real multimedia.

The digital piano combines in it the sound of acoustic piano with the fine control and expediency of an electronic device. This is done by playing reverse digital recordings or samples letting out different sounds as the player presses various notes. Like the ordinary piano this electronic model responds to the touch of the musician increasing or decreasing in volume. There is also a sustain pedal.

Some electronic keyboards are weighted so that player gets the same feel as that of an acoustic piano. The bonus point is that digital pianos are incredibly cheaper when compared to their senior cousins. These occupy less space and is minus the botheration of tuning. By using headphones it is possible to practice late at night without bothering the family and neighbours. Some sophisticated models include disk drives that allow for orchestral accompaniments and even recordings.

Electronic keyboards in organs imitate the sounds of the conventional pipe, reed and tone-wheel organs. Here again the size is fraction that of the senior organ and the price is modest – to say the least.

Electronic keyboards reach their crescendo of success in synthesizers and samplers. There are many types of synthesizers – facilities for playing back, recordings and creating exotic sounds with fine sensitive controls. There are voluminous libraries of pre-programmed sounds for the asking. Most of the synthesizers and samplers are termed multiimbral. This means playing back of many sounds simultaneously.

Another name to be acquainted with in the modern age of electronic music is MIDI or Musical Instrument Digital Interface. It is a kind of standard language in the music world that allows electronic keyboards to be inter-connected and also to be linked to the computer. Music softwares are a must for students of harmony and composition.

Portable electronic keyboards are compact, light and easy to carry. Possessing one is real cool fun. The speakers are built in and thus no external ones are required. These are chameleons of the music world and can change its character bringing out sounds of a dozen instruments at the wish of the player – piano, organ and even drums.

The market of electronic keyboards is growing very fast. Manufacturers have responded with a mixture of keyboard products. The primary has been promotion of electronic keyboard through publication and advertising enabling the public to know about it. A target has been set for introducing this new contrivance amongst music educators of music technology in major universities across US. Setting up websites for this purpose of enlightening people about electronic keyboards has also been a major step forward.

An important part of music education is music technology as can be seen the world over in television and film productions as well as the Internet. The learning and application of electronic keyboards has become relatively easy and the impact is more powerful than before. In the age of electronics changes on the musical front too are happening overnight. Thus updating is an important part of publications.

Yamaha Electone Organ Versus Yamaha Arranger Keyboard

17 May

Yamaha Electone Organ Versus Yamaha Arranger Keyboard

Over the past ten years or so, electric organ sales have slumped to all time low. Yet the arranger keyboard market continues to flourish, especially with keyboards such as the Yamaha Tyros, Korg PA-2X Pro and the Roland G70. In my opinion, the organ is much more playable as a live instrument, and using bass pedals, you can play the organ without any drum machine or automatic chords and get a fantastic sound.

The keyboard on the other hand would sound thin, definitely lacking without auto chord/bass. Of course, arranger keyboards are considerably cheaper than new organs and take up less room. This has created a new generation of keyboard players, some of which could never afford the hefty cost of an organ.

So is this the end for the electric organ. So how do organ manufacturers address this problem? Well they were and still are designed to be a piece of furniture. Great big lumps of wood, which appeal to the older generation, which is why they have the reputation of being an older person’s musical instrument. This need to be changed so they appeal to all generations. The next major change has to be the hefty cost. A top of the range electric arranger keyboard such as the Roland G70 would cost between two to three thousands pounds. The top of the range Roland Atelier organ will cost you in the region of twenty thousand pounds new.

This change may have already started with new models from Yamaha with the Yamaha D-Deck organ and the top of the range Yamaha Electone Stagea. Both are portable and very modern looking. Unfortunately, there is not a lot of information on these models unless you read Japanese. Yamaha have decided there is no organ market in the UK, Europe or the USA. So if you want one of these models you will have to import it yourself.

At the time of writing this, even these new modern looking organs are now out of date. As far as I am aware the Yamaha Stagea electone organ and Yamaha D-Deck organ do not have the “Super Articulation” that is available on the Yamaha Tyros 2 arranger keyboard. There are also a lot of brand new features on the latest crop of arranger keyboards, which include Roland G70, Korg PA 800 and the Ketron Audya, the latter, still a prototype.

So if you want an electric organ set up. You might be better of buying two arranger keyboards and a pedal board. It would be considerably cheaper than importing the Yamaha Stagea and you would be assured of the latest sounds and technological advancements.
