What to look for in a metronome

What to look for in a metronome

When purchasing a metronome there are a number of factors to consider. If you don’t know exactly what you are looking for in a metronome, choosing one might be a little overwhelming at first because there are so many styles of metronome available. You can spend as little as or many hundreds of dollars on a metronome. So it can be helpful to think about what features you value the most and make your final decision based on those factors.

Size matters

No matter what kind of metronome you pick, it can only help you if you actually are able to practice with it. For many musicians such as string players and wind players, this means having a metronome that can fit in your case easily. The smallest type of metronome is the “credit card” style metronome. These are small enough to even fit in most flute cases on the side pocket.  Seiko is best known for these ultra small models, and they are quite inexpensive. Most major brands offer small model metronomes. A nice feature to look for in these models is a table stand. This allows you to rest the metronome comfortably on a table rather than have it take up room on your stand. For an instrumentalist like a pianist or someone who has a regular practice area where portability is not an issue, a larger metronome is just fine. In this situation a large mechanical “pendulum” style metronome can be nice because of how impressive they look.

I can’t hear you!

This may seem obvious, but its very important that you are able to hear your metronome very clearly. For most woodwind instruments this isn’t a problem, but for brass and percussion you will need something that can really project. The Dr. Beat line of metronomes, especially their larger models are quite loud. Some metronomes offer a choice of different sounds, some more piercing than others, experimentation is key here.  Many metronomes also have a headphone line out feature that makes it much easier to hear the beat. Not all players like this approach however because the headphones themselves can muffle the sound of your instrument.

Multitasking with a tuner

Many metronomes now offer a tuner as well, though you have to be careful when selecting these as sometimes they lack key features on one or the other. Also take a close look at the interface, with both metronome and tuner features make sure the buttons and interface are not too complicated. Although these types of metronomes are often not as full featured it’s often worth the convenience to have two tools in one. The korg TM-40 serves as a fine basic metronome and tuner, and you can actually have both modes running simultaneously which can come in handy.

Program-ability

Some higher end metronomes and drum machines offer some programing functionality. This can range from being about to set difference accent beat for different meters, sub division of beats or full blown programing of mixed meter and changing metric passages. If you need this functionality, hands on time with this types of metronomes at your local music store might be needed to decide which one is the best for you.

Extra features?

Some metronomes offer specialized features that might appeal to some musicians. For example, the Intelly IMT-301 has an on board hygrometer and temperature sensor. This may seem like a strange feature to include in a metronome, but this is actually a favorite among string players because it keeps an eye on the relative humidity in the case which is very important for proper maintenance.

Keyboard Layout Problems – How To Fix Them

Keyboard Layout Problems – How To Fix Them

Keyboard layout specifies what character the computer will display when you will press the certain key on your keyboard. There are various characters in different languages, but in Windows you can easily switch between languages with Control + Shift or Alt + Shift key stoke. That is great, because you don’t need to use another PC or different keyboard.

But if you are using two or more layouts you will certainly face some difficulties. For instance, sometime you forget to switch to necessary layout and do blind typing, but when you see the result, which is in wrong layout, you have to retype.

It became a huge problem, especially, when layouts looks like the same and it is hard to determine from the first look that you are using the wrong layout.

Another problem is using more than two layouts. Now you will need to press Control + Shift twice to select the necessary layout. And this might be a great problem, because you will always need to check what layout you are using now and you will waste your work time to technical things.

There are some possible ways to make this problem solved. For sure, you can using Windows keyboard layout options to temporary disable some layouts, but it will take you much time to open settings dialog, change settings and then close dialog and do this every time you will need a layout again.

There also exists a number of program which address the problems of keyboard layouts, for instance, some software tools might automatically switch your layout if you are typing in a wrong language and convert the text that you have already typed into the right layout. But tools like this will not eliminate the problem of switching between three or more layouts, especially, if layouts look the same.

One of the possible solutions for this problem is specifying a special switch short key for switching between layouts. For instance, if you are using English, German and French you can specify one short key to switch between English and German and another short key to switch between German and French. In this way, you will always be sure that you have switched to the correct layout. But it will be much harder to switch between layouts. Anyway, Windows has this option and you should try to use it.

Another problem when you are learning a new keyboard layout is that you might not know what keys you should press to get necessary character. There is a good solution for this issue too. Run Windows screen keyboard and you will see all characters that are available on the current keyboard layout.

Using various keyboard layouts is a great way to save your time and type in a various languages, but don’t waste your time typing the same twice or switching between layouts, learn this aspect carefully and use short keys suggested by Windows to be professional about keyboard layouts.

Finally, if you are system administrator and there are many users who don’t feel good about changing layouts, train them and use freeware and commercial software tools that might help about layout problem.

Keyboard Lessons Online Await Adults Anxious To Learn To Play

Keyboard Lessons Online Await Adults Anxious To Learn To Play

If you are interested in learning the piano and want to learn from the comfort of your own home, online keyboard lessons are the way to go. Many sites offer you the instruction you need to begin playing the piano now.

By performing a simple search with phrases like “Keyboard Lessons Online” or “Piano Lessons Online,” you will open up a world of resources. Each of the sites you visit will teach in a different style. When looking for keyboard lessons on the web, you need to choose the method that suits your learning style.

You can find instruction from places that have only a web presence. The other option is to find a music education facility in your area and ask if they have an online learning program. The benefit of this is access to resources at their facility, such as music books and an instructor you can meet. You can take online lessons and have the hometown one-on-one support you may need.

For those that prefer straight web teaching, online sites that offer all their resources at the click of a mouse are plentiful. Consider the following when choosing keyboard lessons online:

* Use proper search phrases as mentioned above, but with variations. You will find a variety of sites to enable you to make an informed decision. Try other search phrases, such as “Play Piano,” “Piano Playing,” “Keyboard Courses Online,” and “Play Keyboard.” Come up with your own variations and see what happens.

* If you find personal instructors, familiarize yourself with their credentials. Do they have the knowledge to guide you properly through the online lessons?

* It’s great to learn with others. Does the online piano teaching site have a forum for students to chat with one another about lessons and other musical topics? With a members’ forum, you don’t have to feel isolated in your piano study.

* Consider the cost of taking lessons online. There may not be any! Many piano lesson sites are free and reputable. Who says there’s no such thing as a free lunch? However, some do charge a fee and may offer more benefits and a greater depth of study. It depends on how serious you plan to get with your keyboard study.

* Consider whether you want to study with text and accompanying diagrams or something more. Some sites offer audio instruction, and some offer both audio and video lessons. Many offer e-books for download as part of online learning.

* Look at keyboard lesson sites that combine practical playing with theory lessons. Sometimes it pays to know the elements that make up what you’re playing. This allows for deeper understanding of the piece as a whole.

Keyboard lessons from home afford you the opportunity to learn at you own pace on your own time. You do not have to worry about getting to a lesson on time because you’re stuck in traffic. Keyboard lessons online are great for those with time-constraints. They’re available 24/7 and are waiting for you now.

Our Body Cannot Synthesize Vitamin C

Our Body Cannot Synthesize Vitamin C

Vitamin C – a powerful antioxidant which can protect us from harmful free radicals, is not manufactured by our body.

Some mammals like rats, have their own manufacturing plant for Vitamin C. No wonder they can live in polluted places because they have a ready supply of this strong vitamin.

As an Antioxidant

Vitamin C is water soluble and it could stay in the body until it is excreted through the urine as a waste product. Unlike fat soluble vitamins like vitamin E which can be stored in the fats for future use.

The antioxidant properties of Vitamin C operate in the water regions of our body. Free radicals which come near Vitamin C are easily neutralized.

Depending on the antioxidant needs of an individual, a 500 mg intake of Vitamin C can be consumed from 3 to 5 hours or a litle more. That’s why you hear nutritionists recommend that you eat fruits on several servings spread throughout the day.

As an immune booster

Our immune system is the first level of defense against harmful foreign invaders. With a weak immune system, our bodies would easily be attacked by harmful invaders.

A friend of mine was once diagnosed to have this thyroidism. Laboratory results depicted that her immune system was attacking the T4 cells in her body. The doctor tried to correct the problem by prescribing a pill to inhibit the activity of her immune system. Less than 24 hours later, she contracted several diseases. Rashes, tonsillities and high fever manifested.

This just goes to show how important our immune system is. This example demonstrates that harmful microorganisms are always attacking us and our immune system is constantly defending us.

Vitamin C is required for the proper function of leukocytes as well as raising the production levels of our immune system. Boosting our immune system with Vitamin C can make their jobs more efficient.

As a prevention for arthritis

Bodily structures such as bones and cartilages requires a protein called collagen to hold them together and keep them in good condition. Vitamin C is a requirement for the manufacturing of collagen making it a preventive measure for degenerative diseases like arthritis.

Where can you get Vitamin C?

The best way to get Vitamin C into your body is to eat foods which contain Vitamin C, especially fruits and vegetables. Another way is to take supplements. It’s best if the vitamin supplements you are taking contains Vitamin C.

Why humans cannot manufacture Vitamin C while other mammals can remains to be a mystery. Scientists have proven with extensive research that Vitamin C is vital to our well being.

Timbre, Pitch and Volume of a Synthesizer

Timbre, Pitch and Volume of a Synthesizer

Synthesizer is a complex musical instrument. It is all about sound. And there are three very important things that control the sound. Those three are, timbre, pitch and volume of a synthesizer. If you do know enough about them, then your knowledge about the synthesizers will be considered incomplete. Here is some information on these to help you understand the instrument better and master it’s technical aspects.

In the case of synthesizer, the timbre is controlled by one module and the pitch is controlled by another module. Controlling the volume is not very tough.

First let us talk about the pitch, which is an indispensable part among the timbre, pitch and volume of synthesizer. Normally sound is of two basic types. One is pitched sound and another one is unpitched sound. But there are lots of sounds that fall in between these two categories. So it will be better if sounds are categorized as single pitched sound with harmonics and unpitched sound. Chords fall under this category.

A VCO or Voltage Controlled Oscilattor controls the basic pitch of a particular sound. A periodic waveform is generated by the VCO with many harmonics. Most of the synthesizers have two types of waveforms. They are called sawtooth wave and square wave. There is a good reason for using two waveforms. Actually the sawtooth consists all the harmonies. But the square wave consists only the odd harmonics. They do not contain the even harmonics. If you use good quality synthesizer filters, then you would be able to subtract the unwanted harmonics from the waveforms.

Though it is good but the problem that occurs is that the instruments change the timbre constantly. This change happens in a very complex way. This is micro modulation. The filters, which are generally used, are not sophisticated enough. For this reason, some synthesizers fail to copy the original sound of any acoustic instrument. It is not that the sounds cannot be copied. But the sounds do not produce the original effect like the acoustic instruments. Sampler is the best tool to copy the original sound. If you use sampler, then the copied sound will be more realistic.

Controlling the volume of a synthesizer is easy nowadays. There are lots of volume controllers available. There are digital volume controllers also. They offer you a lot of facilities to control the volume.

Volume generators are also available for synthesizers. These generators consists a lot of modes of controlling the volume. Right offset, left offset, etc. It has also got some volume effects. These effects give the volume a different feel. And makes the instrument worth listening.

Timbre, pitch and volume of a synthesizer are one of the most important parts of synthesizers. Without them, there will not be any proper sound production by the synthesizer. The sound of this instrument is good mainly because of them.

If you really want to play the instrument well, then you must be aware of all the details about the timbre, pitch and volume of a synthesizer.
